"Discourse is not simply that which translates struggles or systems of domination, but is the thing for which and by which there is struggle; discourse is the power which is to be seized." Michel Foucault

About the course

This course introduces students to the field of Discourse Analysis, exploring its historical and contemporary approaches. Students will gain an understanding of the relationship between language, power, and society, and how to conduct discourse-based research. The course will also cover the basics of writing academic articles and reports.

The sessions are hybrid; some are face-to-face, and others are online. (You can attend online only if needed)

Some of the specific topics that will be covered include: What is Discourse Analysis and what is its approach? What are Critical Discourse Analysis and Foucauldian Discourse Analysis? How can we understand the ideological, social, and political implications of language use? What are the frameworks and tools used to conduct discourse-based research? How to balance between theoretical frameworks and practical analysis? What is the role of discourse in shaping social identities, power relations, and ideologies?

By the end of the course, students will be able to: Cover sufficient conceptual and background material on the selected topic. Reflect on the literature directly related to theories of Discourse Analysis. Compare and contrast different research methods and tools in discourse analysis. Understand how to write academic articles and reports. Conduct discourse analysis research on a topic of the student's choice.

This course is a great option for students who are interested in learning more about language, power, ideology, society, and the ways in which discourse shapes social realities. It is also a valuable introduction to the field of Discourse Analysis and discourse-based research.
